1. My Doom
My Doom was first noticed in January 2004 and it wreaked havoc all over the world with over 2 million computer users affected within the first few weeks of its release. It was transferred via email messages with compelling subject lines. This virus which is also known as ‘novarg’ conveniently takes the cake as the most notorious computer virus ever.
First, you get a mail with a subject line that says ‘Mail Transaction Failed’. The mail comes with an attachment as well. If the attachment is executed, the virus would quickly latch on to all the email addresses found in the recipients address book and then transfer the mail to them as well. Losses of more than $38 million were incurred due to the spread of this notorious virus.
2. ILOVEYOU
Okay, this was the one I suffered years back and it still ranks as the second most notorious computer virus in the world. The ILOVEYOU virus was first detected in the Philippines on the 4th of May, 2000 and became a global problem within few hours. The virus of course plays on the human emotion, Love.You get a mail with the subject “ILOVEYOU” and then you, thinking it’s a message from your lover or a secret admirer, go ahead to open the mail which contains a .TXT file titled ‘Love-Letter-For-You.TXT.Vbs. As soon as the file is launched, the virus latches on to the first 50 email addresses it finds in your windows address book and sends the mail out to them too. It also affects multimedia files saved on the computer as well
3. Sobig F
Sobig F is another notorious virus. It was discovered in August 2004 and cost damages worth over $4Billion. It is actually the 6th of the Sobig virus ‘series’ with the Sobig A-E having wreaked havoc at different times in the past.Sobig F also comes with a mail from a legitimate source and once opened, creates security holes through which the users contact email addresses are trapped and attacked as well.
4. Code Red
Code Red was discovered in July 2001 by two employees of the eEye Digital Security. They were enjoying the “Code Red Mountain Dew’ drink when they discovered the virus hence the reason for the name ‘Code Red’.It took advantage of a flaw in the Microsoft Internet Server system and affected more than 400,000 servers in the world including those of the White House.
5. SQL Slammer
The SQL Slammer also known as ‘Sapphire’ was first discovered in January 2003. It is a standalone malicious program that affected more than 75,000 hosts within few minutes. It targeted random IP addresses to discharge the worms to.Affected organizations include Bank of America ATM service, Continental Airlines and Seattle’s 911 emergency response services. Over $1.2 Billion losses were incurred due to the attack.
